Health insurance for self-employed people in Tennessee.
If you work for yourself, nobody hands you a health plan. You have to find one on your own, and the choices can be confusing. I know, because I've been there.
Why I understand
I own a food truck and catering company here in Nashville. When I went looking for health coverage for my family, I had no employer plan and no one to explain my options. What I found changed how I see health insurance. So I became a licensed agent to help other people who work for themselves.
Who I work with
- Food truck, restaurant and catering owners
- Rideshare and delivery drivers
- Freelancers and contract workers paid on a 1099
- Barbers, stylists and other booth renters
- Real estate agents and others paid on commission
- Small business owners without a group plan
Your main options
- Marketplace plans (HealthCare.gov). They can't charge you more or turn you down because of your health. Savings depend on your income. Fowler Consulting is not connected with the Marketplace, but if it fits you best, you should know that.
- Private plans. These are priced on your age and health history. They can cost less if you're healthy. They don't come with income-based savings, and they may not cover pre-existing conditions the same way.
- Extra coverage. Some plans pay you cash for a hospital stay, an accident or a serious illness. They sit on top of a main plan. They don't replace it.
Before you buy
- Look past the monthly price. Check the deductible and the most you could pay in a year.
- Make sure your doctors and prescriptions are covered.
- If your income goes up and down, pick a payment you can make in a slow month.
- Ask your tax preparer about the self-employed health insurance deduction. The IRS uses Form 7206 to figure it.
